Cook/Tower – Lake Vermilion
With lake temperatures continue in the mid 60s, walleyes are biting on a Lindy rig and crawler on windswept weed lines. Perch fry are hiding in the weeds and the walleyes are on the prowl. Crank baits are also working well–best is trolling on cloudy, windy days or low-light conditions. The reef bite is OK using slip bobbers and leeches in the evening. Some very large muskies are basking in the cabbage or rocks, and some are being caught, but they are not aggressive. Deep weeds, smaller baits or fishing at night improves your odds. Bass are quite active taking soft plastics, top water baits and small spinners in traditional summer haunts. To find out more, dial 1-800-648-5897, or visit www.lakevermilionresorts.com

Northeastern Minnesota

International Falls
Rainy Lake walleye are falling into more typical summer patterns and can be found in 25-30 feet of water around the submerged reefs. On sunny days, the best bet is to jig with a long anchor rope. If the day turns windy and there’s a chop, try trolling a spinner rig on a long line very slowly. Sauger can usually be found where the walleyes are congregating – the trick is to set your presentation just a few feet deeper. Good numbers of fish are currently coming from the reefs between Black Bay and the Brule Narrows. There are also some great spots in Sand Bay. Lots of smallmouth bass anglers are in the area, testing the waters before this weekend’s Fort Frances Bass Championship and the International Falls Bass Championship held in late August. Anglers report that the bass are hitting crayfish-type lures around the rocky edges of the weed beds. Large northern pike have moved a bit deeper, and are aggressively chasing large minnows and flashy lures. The southern shoreline and rocky bays between Dove Island and Lost Bay have been excellent for bass and northern pike. For more information, dial 1-800-325-5766, or visit www.rainylake.org
