Northeastern Minnesota

International Falls
Walleye are congregating on the windward shorelines of Rainy Lake and hitting jigs tipped with shiner minnows. The best depth varies, with some fish found surprisingly shallow. Crappies are also biting, and responding to pink, orange and red jigs tipped with a minnow or worm. Large northern pike continue to be pulled from Cranberry and Jackfish bays, especially on flashy crankbaits. On the Rainy River, anglers are catching walleye just west of International Falls, as well as near the Littlefork River and a bit further west below the Manitou Rapids. When fishing near the rapids, anchor and cast a spinner and minnow rig. For more information, dial 1-800-325-5766, or visit

The team’s three consecutive victories is not only a career best, it is also a wonderful end to a fantastic partnership.

Brainerd, Minn. – A sharp thump followed by a hook-set and slack line has long been a sign that the notorious “papermouth” has struck again. Crappie are so named due to hooks pulling through the soft tissue of their “paper” mouths. However, what many don’t realize is that when a crappie feeds, he inhales the bait in one motion, like a vacuum. By the time an angler feels the thump, the crappie has already exhaled and spit the bait out. With good timing, it is possible to set the hook firmly, but generally anglers settle for puncturing the top lip as the lure is spit and landing the fish carefully, so the hook doesn’t fall out.
