Walleye action on Rainy Lake has been excellent. The best results have been at the submerged reefs in 20-30 feet of water using a jig and minnow combination. A number of productive reefs can be found from Grindstone Island to north of Cranberry. Walleye are also being pulled from depths of 10-15 feet in Saginaw and Black bays, but these fish seem to prefer leeches and worms. Smallmouth bass have been extremely active, and can be found along most of the rocky shorelines from Dove Bay on east. Northern pike action has been best in Jackfish Bay. On the Rainy River, walleye are hitting shiner minnows trolled with a spinner. Another successful tactic has been casting across the current near the weed edges close to shore. Some of the best locations have been the wider bends west of International Falls and near the mouth of the Littlefork River. For more information, dial 1-800-325-5766, or visit www.rainylake.org

Rainy Lake walleye are hitting jig and minnow combinations, especially at Birch Point, around the islands north of Jackfish Bay, and in Cranberry and Lost bays. Walleye are starting to hit from the submerged reefs east of the Brule Narrows. Crappie action has been inconsistent, however if you locate these fish you will have no trouble catching them. The best place to look is in Black Bay along the channel of the Rat Root River, as well as back into to Rat Root Lake. Smallmouth bass are responding well to spinners on a treble hook - for the most fish, try casting near the rocky shorelines between Dove and Lost bays. In the Rainy River, most anglers are concentrating their fishing efforts at the confluence of the Littlefork and Big Fork rivers. Another popular spot has been just below the Manitou Rapids. In the river, use a shiner minnow for the walleye, with spinner rigs working best for the smallmouth bass. For more information, dial 1-800-325-5766, or visit www.rainylake.org
